K9 Nose Work® – Continuing Nosework Seminar

22 Nov

We attended an awesome K9 Nose Work® in Asheville this weekend.  Jill Marie O’Brien and Leah Gangelhoff were the instructors – and did an awesome job. I have attended an Intro to Nosework Workshop in the past,  plus Ren just passed her ORT – but we still have tons and tons to learn about this sport.  The Workshop covered Intro to Odor, Vehicle Searches, and Exterior Searches. Lots of notes and takeways.

I was surprised that the dogs, people, talking etc. didn’t phase her at all.  Once she see’s its Nosework time, she is all business and wants to hunt.

The biggest take away for me I think was how I was rewarding incorrectly.

Coming from a mostly agility training background, I had taught Ren that her treat bag was the source of her reward.  In Nosework, the Odor “Source” needs to be where the reward comes from. Some great learnings and can’t wait until camp in April!
